Frequently Asked Questions About a Dental Cleaning
How many times per year should I have a dental cleaning?
We recommend coming in twice a year for most patients. However, if your gums are inflamed or you have build up or a lot of hardened plaque, we may ask you to visit for dental cleanings three or four times a year instead.
Is a dental cleaning painful?
A dental cleaning is usually comfortable and easy. If your mouth is extra sensitive, just let us know. We can apply a numbing gel or adjust how we work to make sure you feel better during the dental cleaning.
How long does a dental cleaning appointment take?
A typical cleaning appointment lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The exact time varies based on how much plaque has built up on your teeth and whether we need to take X-rays or apply fluoride treatment.
When you visit us regularly every 6 months, your appointments are usually shorter.
What is the difference between a standard dental cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A standard cleaning cleans the visible parts of your teeth above your gum line. This type of cleaning is for patients whose gums are in good health.
A deep cleaning (sometimes called scaling and root planing) is needed when you have periodontal (gum) disease. It cleans deeper under your gums and smooths the roots of your teeth. We'll let you know which type of cleaning is right for you.
What should I do after my cleaning appointment?
If we put fluoride on your teeth, don't eat or drink anything for 30 minutes. Don’t brush your teeth for at least 4-6 hours.
Keep brushing your teeth two times each day and floss at least once a day. Use any special toothpaste or rinse we recommend at your appointment. If your teeth hurt or feel sensitive, try toothpaste made for sensitive teeth (like Sensodyne). Stay away from very hot or very cold food and drinks for one or two days.
Do cleanings help prevent cavities and gum disease?
Yes! Coming in for regular cleanings is one of the best things you can do to help avoid cavities, gum disease, and losing teeth.
When you come see us, we take off the plaque and hard buildup that you can't remove at home with your toothbrush and floss. Combined with a good oral care routine at home, regular dental cleanings can help keep your teeth, gums, and whole mouth healthy for years to come.
