Frequently Asked Questions About Root Planing
How can I tell if I need root planing treatment?
Look for these signs:
Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
Your gums look red, puffy, or swollen.
You have bad breath that won't go away.
Your gums are pulling away from your teeth.
Your teeth feel loose or are shifting.
If you notice any of these signs, it's time to call us so we can check your gums and recommend whether root planing or other gum disease treatments are right for you.
Does root planing treatment hurt?
We want you to be comfortable! We use a special medicine called a local anesthetic to make your gum area completely numb before we start the root planing treatment.
That means you should feel very little or no pain while our dental team is cleaning deep under your gums and removing the bacteria that cause gum disease.
How much time does root planing take?
The time needed depends on how many teeth we need to treat.
Treating one section of your mouth takes around 45 minutes to an hour.
If we need to treat your entire mouth, we'll schedule 2 to 4 separate appointments to keep you comfortable.
We'll let you know how many appointments you need and how long each will be when we examine your gums.
What happens after my root planing treatment appointment?
Your gums might feel sore or sensitive for a couple of days afterward. This is completely normal — it shows your gums are healing!
To help your gums recover:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush carefully.
Stay away from very hot, cold, and spicy foods for 1-2 days.
Use a warm saltwater rinse to keep the area clean.
If needed, take pain relief medicine as we suggest.
Within a few days, you should notice your gums feel better, bleed less, and look pinker and healthier!
Do I need root planing treatment more than once?
Most people only need root planing treatment one time. If you take good care of your teeth at home and visit us regularly for cleanings, your gums should stay healthy.
Sometimes gum disease can come back, or hard buildup might form under your gums again. If that happens, we might need to do another root planing treatment. Coming in for regular visits helps us spot any problems early so we can keep your gums in great shape!
