Root Canal Therapy and What to Expect

Root canal therapy is used to treat or repair a tooth that is infected or badly damaged. The dentist will remove the portions of the tooth that are damaged, clean and disinfect it and then fill it back up and seal it off. The reason the pulp of the tooth becomes infected can vary. It can happen when a tooth is cracked, has a deep cavity, trauma to the tooth or excessive dental treatments. Basically, a root canal refers to cleaning the canals inside the root of the tooth.

What Should be Expected from a Root Canal

Your dentist may recommend a root canal. It is a procedure that will be completed over several office visits. The series of treatments include:

  • Getting X-rays: This is the first thing a dentist will do if they suspect you need root canal therapy.
  • Administer Anesthesia: The affected tooth will be deadened using a local anesthesia.
  • Removing the Pulp: An opening will be made in the tooth so the diseased pulp can be removed.
  • Filling: Once the pulp has been removed, the empty areas will be filled back up with a special material called gutta-percha. Then it will be sealed back up with a special cement.

Properly aligned teeth not only give you a beautiful smile, but they can significantly improve your overall dental health.
